What is hydronic heating and how does it work?

Hydronic heating uses hot water rather than hot air to warm a building. A boiler heats the water, circulator pumps move it through a closed loop, and the heat is released through radiant floor tubing, radiators, baseboard convectors or a hydronic coil in an air handler. Water carries far more heat than air, so the pipes are small, the system is quiet, and the warmth is even from floor to ceiling. Snow melt systems use the same principle with a glycol mix under outdoor slabs.

Is hydronic heating more efficient than forced air?

Accepted Answer

Usually, for three reasons. A modern condensing boiler modulates its output and runs at very high efficiency when the return water is cool, which radiant floors deliver. Heating the floor instead of the air lets people feel comfortable at a lower thermostat setting. And there is no ductwork leaking heated air into attics and joist spaces. Real savings depend on the building, the fuel and how well the system is sized and commissioned, so we do not quote a percentage without a heat loss calculation.

How much does boiler installation or radiant floor heating cost in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

A boiler swap in an existing mechanical room, a full radiant retrofit of a finished house, and in-slab tubing in a new build are three very different jobs. Boiler size, venting, whether the floor is being poured anyway, the number of zones and the controls all move the number. Yes. Basement slabs can be poured over tubing during a finish, and staple-up or aluminum panel systems fit under existing wood floors from below. Whole-house retrofits of finished floors are more involved and are best planned around a renovation. Many homeowners start with the basement, the garage or a bathroom and add zones over time.

Does hydronic heating use gas or electricity?

Either. Most hydronic systems in Southwestern Ontario run on a natural gas or propane condensing boiler, installed and serviced by a licensed gas fitter. Electric boilers and air-to-water heat pumps can also supply a hydronic loop where gas is unavailable or where the owner wants to move off fossil fuels. The distribution side, the tubing, manifolds and controls, is the same whichever heat source drives it.
